Ask most people to name a cannabis holiday and they’ll say 4/20. But there’s a second date circled on every extractor’s calendar, and we’re right in the thick of it: 710, also known as Oil Day.
Celebrated every July 10, 710 is the cannabis world’s tribute to concentrates — hash, rosin, live resin, wax, and full-melt oil. If 4/20 is the block party for all things cannabis, 710 is the connoisseur’s day, dedicated to the craft, potency, and flavor of extracts.
Here at Seeds & Clones, we come at this holiday from a different angle than most. We don’t sell the finished oil — we sell the genetics that make it possible. And if you’ve ever chased a truly special full-melt, you already know the truth: the best rosin strains and hash strains are decided in the garden, not at the press. Resin is bred, not extracted.
Why “710”? The upside-down origin
The name is a simple, clever visual pun. Write out the number 710, flip it upside down, and it reads “OIL.” That’s the whole idea — a tidy piece of shorthand for hash oil and cannabis concentrates.
The gesture is deliberate homage to 4/20. Where 420 grew from a group of California high schoolers in the early 1970s, 710 is a far more modern invention, born from the internet age of cannabis.
A (slightly hazy) history of Oil Day
Fittingly for a holiday about oil, the origins of 710 are a little slippery. The term started bubbling up on cannabis forums and social media around 2011, as dabbing and concentrate culture were beginning to explode. Early adopters wanted a way to distinguish the extract side of cannabis from traditional flower — and “710” was the perfect tongue-in-cheek fit.
The musician TaskRok, of the extraction-tools brand Highly Educated, is often credited with helping push the term into the spotlight during those early years, though no single person truly “owns” it. Like the best cannabis stories, it grew organically.
By 2013, the holiday had gone semi-official: LA Weekly ran a piece declaring “710 is the New 420,” and the first 710 Cup was held in Denver to celebrate concentrates. From there, brands and dispensaries leaned in, July 10 deals became a tradition, and Oil Day settled into its place as the second-biggest holiday on the cannabis calendar.
4/20 vs. 7/10: what’s the difference?
They share a spirit, but they celebrate different things:
- 4/20 is the all-encompassing celebration of cannabis culture, with a heavy emphasis on flower. It’s broad, mainstream, and welcoming to everyone.
- 7/10 is more focused. It’s specifically about concentrates — the science, craftsmanship, and potency of extracts, and the “dabber” subculture that champions them.
Think of flower as your morning coffee and concentrates as the espresso shot: same plant, more intensity, more focus on flavor and terpene expression.
Why high trichome strains make the best hash and rosin
Here’s the truth that gets lost in all the rig talk. Extraction can only concentrate what the plant already produced. A hash-maker’s raw material is resin — the trichome heads packed with cannabinoids and terpenes that coat a well-grown flower. If those trichomes aren’t there in abundance, no press, bag, or solvent can invent them.
That’s why serious hash starts with serious genetics. When we tag a strain “Great for Hash,” we’re pointing to plants that tend to express:
- Heavy trichome production — the frosty, resin-drenched flowers that give you a strong yield when you’re making rosin, bubble hash, or dry sift.
- Rich terpene profiles — because the best concentrates aren’t just potent, they’re flavorful, and that flavor is bred in.
- Dense, resinous structure — the kind of bud that feels sticky and looks like it’s dusted in sugar.
Grow the right genetics well, and you’ve given yourself the best possible starting point for a full-melt worth celebrating.

Bred with extraction in mind
- HASH CRACK and Purple Hash Berries (Crockett Family Farms) — the names say it all; these were built for the press.

- Marrakesh and Bombay (Purple City Genetics) — dense, trichome-heavy, and hash-ready.
Prefer to skip germination? We’re one of the very few seed sites that also sells live clones — a genetic head start on your hash garden. Look for hash favorites like Skywalker OG, MAC 1, and Cap Junky in our Great for Hash Clones collection.
How to celebrate 710 as a grower
You don’t need a rig to honor Oil Day. Some ideas from our side of the plant:
- Start a hash-focused grow. Pick a resin-heavy strain and commit to growing it out with extraction as the goal. There’s no better way to appreciate concentrates than to make your own from flower you cultivated.
- Learn the extraction methods. Read up on the difference between solventless approaches like rosin and bubble hash and the gear involved. Understanding the process makes you a better grower.
- Dial in for resin. Healthy plants, good light, proper harvest timing, and careful drying and curing all protect the trichomes you worked so hard to grow.
- Stock up on genetics. Oil Day is the perfect excuse to plan your next resin-forward run.
